Final Assignment 12/12/19

Over the course of the semester, I have been working on developing a social media presence. Personally, I have never been much of a regular poster on social media, as I have always had a sporadic schedule in terms of posting. When it came to posting to my fan page, I primarily posted to Facebook. The topic of my presence on Facebook was based on the video game company Nintendo. I felt passionate toward uploading Nintendo posts because ever since I was a child, I have been playing games on their consoles as a loyal fan.

Throughout my time posting on Facebook, I would get inspiration for posts by scrolling through Twitter posts from accounts I follow (such as @NinEverything, and many other accounts, reading websites with fun facts, and keeping up with the latest news in gaming.

In terms of going out of my way to put my presence out there and known on the site, I honestly lacked in doing so. I told a few of my friends of the page, but they aren’t very active on Facebook, so I didn’t gain any followers that way. As a result, my statistics were not very high.

Vimeo (Assignment 11 Updated)

Social media is a chance for people around the globe to express themselves, their opinions, and share content. Some social medias grow larger in comparison to others, such as YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. The website Vimeo was launched in November 2004 by Jake Lodwick and Zach Klein.

The platform was the first streaming platform to allow high definition uploads to its site in 2007. Despite this, the platform did not grow to be as large as YouTube. This was most likely due to the fact that Vimeo ceased hosting gaming videos in 2008, due to the larger video durations. This would negatively impact an entire demographic of viewers and people making content, causing them to prefer YouTube and other platforms.

In comparison to YouTube, Vimeo’s conditions for uploading content is restricting. Unless a user pays for premium packages, the size limit of the video to upload is 500 MB, whereas YouTube allows videos as big as 20 GB to be uploaded for free. The quality of the content found on Vimeo is also not as good when compared to YouTube, as Vimeo only allows for up to 720p, while its counterpart goes up to 1080p, HDR, 4K, and 8K.

Vimeo does have its pros too though. The site offers unique privacy settings for content creators. Settings include requiring a password to watch a video, or to embed a video to websites. The site also allows creators to make adjustments to a video and re-upload to the same URL even if a mistake is made to allow the statistics to remain. Vimeo seems to be the better option for people involved with making a website, people who make small errors, or people who want privacy when uploading a video.

The website techsmith made a list of the features vimeo offers.

Online Convert offers a comparison of Vimeo and YouTube on their blog.

Instagram User Richard Mehl (Assignment 8b)

The Instagram user, Richard Mehl has been using the app for its initial intended purpose since early 2016. Since he signed up, he has uploaded over 1,597 posts. He regularly posts pictures of art, whether it be made by him or from his students. He frequently uploads on Instagram, as he has posted about once every week, and most recently has made multiple uploads in the same day.

Upon analyzing his Instagram, it is noticeable that the user commonly uses #svabfadesign in his posts. The images people typically upload in association with this tag are about art, as the tag itself is about the School of Visual Arts. The most popular posts among the tag seem to be ones with collages. Using this hashtag allows Richard to advertise his posts to a multitude of people interested in art. The people who typically follow his account are mostly fellow artists, what appears to be students of the user, and people just interested in what he must upload. After going through other social medias, I was unable to find any other accounts that Richard Mehl could own on Twitter or Facebook. However, he does upload on his website, where he posts all his favorite projects and advertises his book on experimenting with color.

Instagram (Assignment 8)

Ever since Instagram was introduced, millions of people all over the world downloaded the app. Instagram appeals to multiple different demographics, and welcomes anyone to join, just as any other social media would. Celebrities worldwide have also taken to expressing themselves or making their presence known on the app. The personalities that I have investigated and followed all have a unique existence with their page.

When Instagram was initially released, the intention for the app was to simply post photography and artistry. The visual artist that I followed on Instagram was Richard Mehl. On his page, he mainly posts scenic imagery, and has garnered nearly 3,000 followers.

Movember (Midterm)

Movember is a movement that happens annually during the month of November. A focus of the movement is to grow moustaches over the course of the month to raise awareness of a variety of men’s health issues. These include prostate and testicular cancer, as well as suicide. The organization encourages men to get involved with the aim of reducing many preventable deaths. Their methods of engagement include informing men the information they need, creating services to aid males, and listening to their community.

The origins of the movement dates to 2003 when two men from South Australia came up with the idea while in a pub and decided to go through with the plan with the aid of 30 men in their first year. As the years went on, the movement expanded across different countries and managed to generate over $700 million and have helped funded up to 1,250 men’s health projects.

Movember manages to spread the word each year by sharing photos across social media and many people around the world are inspired to host their own events. The movement has even been referenced in the video game industry, as seen in FIFA 14, SONY pushing out a sticker of a moustache that can be placed on a controller of a PlayStation 4, and even Google releasing moustache themed games on their Google Chrome web apps.

The group was able to grab the attention of males worldwide. This movement allows men to rally up for a common cause. Women have the month of October for Breast Cancer Awareness that allows females to rally for, so men can assemble for their own special movement with a piece of their identity.

You can find more information at their website.

Their Twitter posts help promote their message.

They also have a video on Youtube that explains the purpose.

Get out there and vote! It is the responsibility of American citizens to partake in voting, so each one of us should go and fulfill our duty. By putting a vote in, we exercise our right to choose the future that we want. We have the power to make positive change in our communities, so by not voting, it shows that you have no care as to what happens to your surroundings and will just go along with anything.

Voting is crucial to maintaining our democracy, as we can voice our opinion of what we want and have people we choose represent us. The fact that we can all vote in modern day is a privilege on its own, as our ancestors fought for the freedom to vote for all people ranging from all races and genders.

Twitter Trends (Assignment 5)

#Spiderman has been a hot topic in the news over the past few months. After the release of the latest movie in July, things were looking up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the cooperation between Sony and Disney. However, in late August 2019, it was announced that the agreement that allowed Marvel Studios to use Spiderman in the MCU had fallen through due to the two companies being unable to reach a new agreement in terms of distribution of profits. As a result, Spiderman was no longer allowed to be used in any future Marvel flick, since Sony owns the cinematic rights to the character.

A month had gone by, and hope seemed lost for the character making a return, until just recently it was announced that a new deal was reached. What the terms of the new deal are exactly weren’t revealed, but it allows the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige to continue to produce one more flick with the character, and potentially more if everything turns out well.

Fans of Spiderman naturally reacted over social media over the news. Throughout the popular posts, people have posted articles and made memes. Overall, positive feedback was made in response. Even companies like the M&M twitter account responded with glee to the news. Most of the Twitter posts I found were pretty much what I had expected to see, a large group of fans united and happy to see a beloved character continue his stories in movies. The memes overall captured my attention the most.

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding on the internet is done easily because of multiple resources available to partake in it. Websites such as GoFundMe, Kickstarter, Patreon, and much more assist people in spreading the word of their goal and allowing people to donate to a cause of their liking. One example of a successful campaign using crowdfunding techniques is Khushi Baby. A group of students from Yale University founded this in response to the immense number of deaths caused by unvaccinated children. To combat this, the Yale students decided to create a chip that would hold the details of a child’s vaccination history. They were successful with their campaign on Kickstarter, receiving 305 backers and gaining $31,500.

When it comes to supporting and donating money to someone who is unknown, people may be wary to give money, however, if it involves giving to a good cause, people will gladly backup the project.

Blogs

Blogs on the internet cover various topics that may interest people of certain demographics. The two blogs I’d like to compare are The Earth Story and Smitten Kitchen, both of which specialize in differing topics.

The Earth Story is a blog that is run by a group of individuals who have a background in Earth Science. On the blog, they post pictures of pictures of different earthly sights such as oceans, climates, geology, etc. The main reason I like this blog is because the photos they share portray beautiful highlights of what can be found on Earth; however, I will criticize it for not having as many scientific facts as I thought it would have. This blog has a scientific theme to it, targeting individuals who share a similar interest earth science and want to be shown different aspects of nature. If any subscriber to this blog wants to reach out to the authors, the blog contains tabs for asking questions and submitting posts. Across the top of the page, there is a tab that features a link to the group’s Facebook page.

The blog Smitten Kitchen is run by a woman named Deb Perelman and is designed to showcase unique recipes to subscribers of the blog. This website is categorized in an orderly matter, with recipes labeled under specific categories. The blog is nice to explore, as it showcases a wide variety of recipes. However, when it comes to reading up on recipes, I find it oddly formatted, as the ingredients and instructions come at the bottom of the page, after the author gives an experience in relation to the food. On the main interface of the page, there consists a list of social medias in association with Smitten Kitchen.

Bloggers can monetize their sites through a few different ways. The most common method is to place ads on the site, where money is gained via clicks or views on advertisements. Alternatively, a blogger could sell private ads if you have enough traffic, or could sell digital products including forms of media such as images or music, eBooks, etc.

Introduction

My name is Robert Vitthuhn. I go by a few different nicknames, but most of my friends call me Rob. I’m a huge nerd, as I love playing a wide variety of games and getting competitive with them, whether it be video games or card games. I’m also very much into Marvel films, as I have spent countless hours watching them, looking into theories about upcoming movies, and enjoying the countless memes that have been made. My passion is to enjoy living life and having a good time with my friends and family. I’m still experimenting with what I want for the future, so my current major is Individual Studies. In terms of the next few years, I’m still sorting that out, so I’m unsure now. My first real notable web-based media experience is when I uploaded a short film on YouTube for a project in High School. With that, I had several my close friends and family watch and enjoy it. They commented on what they thought and what could be improved. Keeping the flaws in mind, I sought to improve what I had lacked in my first film and continued by making a second one. This second film has just been recently released on YouTube, and everyone who has seen it has told me that it was even better than the first. This gave me a sense of accomplishment and joy. I mainly use social media to keep in contact my close friends and to stay updated with current events around the world. The social media application I feel I could not live without nowadays would be Instagram. Using that app, I’m able to be connected to a large majority of my acquaintances, keep up with lives, message people, look at memes, and post what’s going on in my life.
